The Project

My latest project was for an Oak extending dining table, commissioned by a family who is currently renovating an 18th Century cottage which is having a contemporary style kitchen fitted. They required something in keeping with the age and character of the cottage but also in fitting with the new inside style and decor.

After consultation, we jointly agreed upon a traditional refectory style table in solid pippy English Oak with plenty of character but maintaining a  clean line look rather than the more traditional rustic approach.

So the agreed commission was for a Pippy Oak Extending Dining Table. The main table seats 8 formally, adding the extension leafs brings the number of seat placings to 12.

The table is as unique as the timber used and has its own natural identity which is formed from the beautiful pip and grain character of the Oak. Main table dimensions are 2.4m x 900mm. When extended the overall length is 3.3m.

The extending dining table arms are integral to the table base, so maybe pushed into the base when not in use. The extension leaves can also be stored separately when they are not in use.

One particular challenge was to maintain the light pale colour of the Oak chosen for the project which was required by the client. To achieve this, a clear hard wax oil was used as the finishing product, completed by a natural hard beeswax.

You can see the table in it’s the new setting in the pictures below which clearly show the natural beauty of the wood and the clean finish that the clients desired.  The clients were incredibly happy with their table and this was their response – “Hi James – Just wanted to say WE LOVE OUR TABLE, thank you sooooooo much”.

Hello everyone – let me fill you in on the latest Quercus Furniture news.  Autumn is here and people are starting to think about the perfect table to have their friends and family sitting around this Christmas.  Have a look at my range of beautiful oak refectory and contemporary tables and give me a call if you would like to discuss what I could make for you.

So after the beautiful contemporary English Elm slab table and the wonderful Arts & Crafts table commissions, the latest project is a traditional large handmade Oak refectory dining table and 12 chairs.

The commission was for a 12 seater (14 when required) traditional style Oak refectory dining table in solid Oak with plenty of character. The ‘frame’ chairs to be made in English Ash with an Oak back splat to complement the main table.  The handmade dining table is in the refectory style and is in solid character Oak.

Table dimensions are 3.6m long x 1.2m wide and 76cm high.

French Farmhouse Refectory Table

I really enjoyed the commission for this handmade refectory table in solid character Oak  with Ash frame chairs  and ‘pippy oak’ back. – Liaising with the client without actually meeting them is something  I do quite a lot  and seem to have a clear  insight into their specific needs.  Building up a picture of the individual requirements and then producing work that  receives the response below is always tremendously heartening. The commission now resides in France

Dear James,

I am always willing to give you a testimonial if you wish at some time in
the future.

Bearing in mind we have never met, been to the workshop or inspected any of
your work other than the website, I can only say that your interpretation of
what we were seeking was “spot on”. We absolutely adore the table and
chairs and so do all the people, French and English alike, who come to have
a meal with us at the house. Without fail they all compliment on the
quality and most of all, how comfortable the chairs are, even after a 4 hour
I am attaching some pictures for you and hope they will be of assistance.
I have some other projects in mind for you James when time and funds permit.

This commission for a large Bespoke  Oak Refectory style Dining Table complete with chairs.  Made in character Oak with ‘turned legs’ and rush seated Ash chairs to match. The worked top gives the table a lovely tactile feel which only usually come with decades of use. The oak refectory dining table and chairs now have a happy home in Lancashire.
