The commission for this handmade reclaimed oak refectory table was to be in reclaimed solid oak with lots of knots and character, including the legs. My wood turner nearly threw me bodily out of the door when I presented him with 4 lumps of what appeared to be ‘knotty pig iron’ which he point blank refused to put on his lathe?? (just can’t get chaps with a sense of adventure these days). So there was only one thing for it – sharpen an old hacking chisel and with the heaviest mallet I could lift, carve them myself. Bloodied, bruised and some time later the results can be seen somewhere in darkest Cumbria.
The handmade reclaimed oak dining table seats 8 and is made with full character English Oak. The refectory table has a distressed finish with turned legs with Gun Barrel style turned and carved legs.
The refectory table top and base were heavily distressed and inshaved to create a medieval look in keeping with the 17th-century cottage.
We finished the refectory table with a Jacobean oil stain followed by 2 coats of a hard wax oil and finally a Jacobean wax.
